10 ways sugar is destroying you and your health

Sugar, yes, please! We can never say no to sweets! Desserts, beverages, sweets, biscuits and in everything possible. Little did we know, sugar is not actually sweet but bitter, it acts as a slow poison running through our veins.
We all have been the prey to its sweetness now it is time to reveal some bitter truths behind it.

Sugar is pretty addictive and it is very difficult to cut down on it. Sugar does more than just adding the taste to your life, it harms pretty much most parts of your body inside out.
Let’s look at the different ways Sugar is trying to destroy you.

Drains your energy

Don’t you feel sleepy and drowsy after devouring desserts and sweets? That’s exactly what added sugar does to you, it drains all the energy you have. When we consume a lot of sugar, Orexins cells that are responsible to keep us awake and energised are suppressed. When these cells aren’t working the best, you feel sluggish and tired.

Increases Blood Pressure

Remember that feeling when you consume an excess of sugar? Yes, the sugar rush! It forces your heart to excessively pumping blood throughout the body causing blood pressure. Sugar is actually worse than salt when it comes to hypertension.

Causes Gout Attack

A gout is a common form of arthritis that causes redness, stiffness and swelling in the joints. High fructose consumption builds uric acid in the blood and causes crystals to form in the joints. That’s when you get the gout attack. But it’s pretty common and controllable, all you have to do is cut down on sugar.

Ages your skin

Advanced glycation end products also known as AGE’s causes the skin to wrinkle fast. In your bloodstream when fats and proteins are exposed to sugar, AGEs are formed. This process causes the skin to lose its elasticity making it look dull.

Weakens your bones

Sugar also affects the strongest part of our body, the bones! AGE’s formed by sugar does not just age your skin but also ages your bones. This is the main reason why people with diabetes have more risks of bone damage and fractures.

Makes you feel hungry

Our body has two important hormones when it comes to eating. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone that signals our body to eat something. Leptin is the satiety hormone that alarms us we’ve had enough.

When we consume food with high fructose, these hormones get disabled hence you can eat a lot of fructose and never feel satiated. This leads to overeating and gaining extra pounds.

It’s addictive!

Believe it or not, sugar addiction is as bad as drugs. Similar to the addictive drugs, our brain releases opioids and dopamine and undergoes same neurochemical changes. Researches say the medicines that are used to treat drug addiction are used to treat sugar addiction too.

Increases Uric Acid

When we consume fructose found in table sugar, fruits,  high fructose corn syrup, it converts the fructose into uric acid. High uric acid levels risk the kidneys and hearts.

Weight gain

Most simple sugars have empty calories. Sugar really doesn’t add anything to your diet. Since it suppresses the hunger and satiety hormones, you never feel full after consuming sugar and hence have the urge to eat more, resulting in weight gain.

Insulin resistance

When we consume sugar, glucose level increases hence our body produces insulin to get glucose out of the blood to the cells. But when we consume excessive sugar, our body pumps a high amount of insulin and eventually our cells stop responding to it, and becomes insulin resistant. This leads to a lot of issues like Diabetes, Heart diseases and metabolic problems.
